Spring 2021
Season Wrap-up for 2020-2021
We have competed in 14 unique tournaments this season! A total of 17 students have represented Sacramento State this season and five of them qualified for nationals!
29 Total elimination rounds! In those elimination rounds we have won FOUR tournament championships with two additional runner-up finishes.
5 Students qualified for the NFA National Championship in LD debate! This years championship was one of the largest we have ever attended and went to a partial triple-octafinal. Ayyah won her first elimination round but lost in doubles on a very close 2-1 decision. This is one of the strongest ever performances by a Sacramento State debater at NFA. This was our first elim win versus an opponent at NFA (Kevin Ozomaro got a bye through triples in 2019).
At the Spring Fling tournament in May, our rookie students continue to do very well. Ariella Sotelo was the tournament champion, Mark Espinosa received a Silver and Jennifer Garabay received a bronze. Mark and Ariella were 1st and 2nd speakers respectively.
Ayyah Al-jibouri was the NCFA Debater of the Year (NFA-LD University division)!! She joins Brandon Garcia, Banafshae Khan, and Kevin Ozomaro as the 4th Sacramento State debater to win this award.
We have continued to show competitive excellence in LD debate both locally and nationally as we build towards the hope of winning a national championship! There is still a lot of uncertainty about what the debate landscape will look like next season, but whether we are travelling again or competing online, Sacramento State will continue to strive for excellence.
National Forensics Association Championship Tournament
The 2020-2021 debate season will probably long be remembered as the "Pandemic Season" - with all of our competition happening online. While there were a lot of adjustments to make, the team still performed as the national powerhouse that we have grown to become. We qualified five students for nationals this year and four of them competed in the online competition. Team Captain Ayyah Al-jibouri became the third ever Sacramento State debater to win her way into the elimination rounds of NFA nats!

This has been another amazing season for Hornet Debate! We have won championships, closed out tournaments, and a large team in two events to the NFA national tournament. See the numbers below to get a sense of how well we have done.
We have competed in 11 unique tournaments this season in five different states. A total of 14 students have represented Sacramento State this season and NINE of them have qualified for nationals!
41 Total elimination rounds (including close-outs and walkovers)!! In those elimination rounds we have received :
2 Octofinalist awards
12 Quarterfinalist awards
3 Semifinalist awards
2 Second place awards,
9 Tournament championships!
21 Speaker awards in the top 10
5 Top speaker awards
13 Final round participants in Extemporaneous speaking
2 First place awards for Extemp
9 Students qualified for the NFA National Championship in LD debate
5 Students qualified for the NFA National Championship in debate and extemporaneous speaking
We have continued to show competitive excellence in LD debate both locally and nationally as we build towards the hope of winning a national championship! In only our second year of competition in extemporaneous speaking we are also demonstrating that Sacramento State is difficult to beat! In our most recent tournaments, we have represented half of the field of final round participants!
Wish us luck as we head to Whitewater, Wisconsin for the NFA National Championship Tournament in April!!

This has been another record-setting year for Hornet Debate and NFA Nationals was no different! Of the seven students who attended, four of them finished with a record of 3-3 or better. Kevin Ozomaro was undefeated through round 5 and ended up the 14th seed in a large field for elims. This makes Kevin only the second Sacramento State debater to break at the NFA national championship, and the best preliminary record ever for our team. SPRING 2018
NCFA Spring Fling @ Solano Community College
The Spring Fling tournament is a "rookie" tournament hosted by the NCFA after the regular season and nationals are over. This tournament is a great opportunity to introduce new students to debate and get them excited about the next season. This tournament is also where year-end regional awards are announced. Sac State will typically bring a small contingent of rookies to spring fling and, historically, we have done very well.
Rookie Division:
Emmanuel Arriaga: 3-3 (5th place!)
Zia Landis: 5-1 (3rd place, 3rd speaker!)
NCFA Outstanding LD Debater at a 4 year University - Kevin Ozomaro!
NCFA Coach of the Year - Jared Anderson

NFA Nationals @ University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
This has been another record-setting year for Hornet Debate and NFA Nationals was no different! Of the five students who attended, four of them finished with a record of 3-3. We had two students with break rounds in round 6, and Kelly Buckband, who started the year in novice, just missed making the novice semi-final round and finished fifth place overall. Based on those results we placed 10th overall in team sweepstakes for debate!
Open Division:
Kelly Buckband: 3-3
Casey Jennett: 3-3
Kevin Ozomaro: 3-3
Evangelic Schuhmeier: 3-3
Raj Singh: 1-5
Sacramento State finished tied for 10th place sweepstakes!!

Regular Season Summary for the 2017-2018 season
This has been a second consecutive record-breaking season for Hornet Debate! We have won more championships, closed out tournaments, and qualified our second largest contingency for NFA national. See the numbers below to get a sense of how well we have done.
We have competed in 12 unique tournaments this season in five different states. A total of 25 students have represented Sacramento State this season and they have been incredible.
62 total elimination rounds (including close-outs and walkovers)!! This surpasses our total from last season by a substantial amount. In those elimination rounds we have received :
1 octofinalist award
9 quarterfinalist awards
6 semifinalist awards
7 second place awards,
7 tournament championships!
12 students qualified for the NFA National Championships
That is FOURTEEN total final rounds, by six different debaters. The team has also won a large number of speaker awards as well as several overall sweepstakes awards (which is really unusual for a team that only competes in debate). Our success has not been carried simply by a few varsity debaters, it has been spread out among a large number of hard-working students, many in their first year of debate.

Spring Fling
The Spring Fling tournament is a "rookie" tournament hosted by the NCFA after the regular season and nationals are over. This tournament is a great opportunity to introduce new students to debate and get them excited about the next season. This tournament is also where year-end regional awards are announced. Sac State will typically bring a small contingent of rookies to spring fling and, historically, we have done very well.
Rookie Division:
Kelly Buckband: 3-0 (tournament champion, top speaker!!)
Brent Butler: 2-1
Rafael Zarazua: 2-1

NFA Nationals - Summary and Results
This has been a record-setting year for Hornet Debate and NFA Nationals was no different! Of the five students who attended, four of them started the season competing in the novice division and had never attended a national tournament. Banafshae Khan, in her second full season as a transfer student for Sac State was our first ever student to break into elims in NFA-LD! We brought our largest squad yet to the tournament, and we placed 10th overall in team sweepstakes for debate!
Open Division:
Maria Burke: 2-4
Bethany Davis: 2-4
Banafshae Khan: 4-2 (Double Octofinalist! 31st speaker)
Kyle Shallcross: 1-5
Dean Talley: 0-6

Regular Season Summary
This has been an historically successful season for Hornet Debate! We have won numerous championships, closed out tournaments, and qualified more people for nationals than ever before. See the numbers below to get a sense of how well we have done.
We have competed in 16 unique tournaments this season (including two parli tournaments) in six different states. A total of 23 students have represented Sacramento State this season and they have been nothing short of dominant.
38 total elimination rounds. In those elimination rounds we have received :
12 quarterfinalist awards
12 semifinalist awards
7 second place awards,
4 tournament championships!
14 students qualified for the NFA National Championships
That is ELEVEN total final rounds, by ten different debaters. The team has also won a large number of speaker awards as well as several overall sweepstakes awards (which is really unusual for a team that only competes in debate). Our success has not been carried simply by a few varsity debaters, it has been spread out among a large number of hard-working students, many in their first year of debate.
