Classroom Conduct: It is important that our individual behavior promotes an environment conducive to full and equal participation and a TEAM first attitude. Whether in the classroom, in a round of debate, or at a debate tournament, I expect civility and respect will be afforded your peers and coaches. Please turn off cell phones in class – no sending or receiving of text messages. Please do not use your computer or classroom computers unless we are working on them as a class or you have special permission.
Attendance: The participatory nature of this course necessitates that you make every effort to avoid missing class and scheduled practice rounds. Your absences not only deprive you of the opportunity to contribute to class discussion, but may also hinder the efforts of your teammates. Due to the amount of travel involved in intercollegiate debate, some classes will be cancelled in advance. Do not assume that class is canceled simply because the team has had travel the previous weekend. To maximize productivity, it is essential that you avoid tardiness. In other words, DON’T BE LATE. Again I ask that you treat this class as you would any other and take attendance seriously. We will take attendance each day.
When you do miss class, please contact a coach or teammate to find out what you have missed. If you miss class in the week prior to scheduled travel, it is very important that you contact a coach so they know your travel status – not doing so means you may be replaced in the upcoming tournament.

Adding/Dropping: I will use the department policies and dates for adds and drops.
Grades: Students will not be given grades based on win-loss record at tournaments. Participation, evidence production, homework and other assignments will determine your grade. Each student will turn in a portfolio at the end of the semester which will help determine semester grades. Please see the attached portfolio requirement for more information.
The class will be graded on a 1000 point scale, heavily weighted towards evidence/homework, but everything counts!

TEAM POLICIES
Team Room (Mendocino 5000):
Team Room (Mendocino 5000):
- You may choose to be issued a key to the team room. If you choose not to request a key, do not bother the office staff to let you in the team room.
- Any student who violates the policies relating to the team room will have their key and room use privileges revoked.
- The team room is first and foremost for working on debate related activities: meeting with coaches, filing, researching, cutting cards, speed drills, etc. You may use the team room to relax or work on assignments from other classes – but should make the room and resources available to teammates who are working on debate a priority.
- People who are not members of the debate team MAY NOT hang out in the team room or use its resources.
- Keep your team room clean and usable at all times. DO NOT leave food in the team room (especially Panda Express). Finish your food and discard any leftovers outside of the team room.
- Keep the team room door closed and locked when no one is inside.
- Please be mindful that offices of professors are nearby – keep noise to a minimum.
- Having the team room is a privilege that may be revoked by me or by the department at any time. Office space is precious on this campus. If you abuse this privilege, you could lose the space. Please use good judgment.
- Living in the team room is not allowed.
- The computers and printers in the team room are to be used for research and debate related work. You do not get to use the computers for email/facebook if a teammate is waiting to do debate related work.
- There is to be NO PERSONAL USE OF PRINTERS. This includes printing assignments for other classes.
Travel:
- We have a limited budget. Depending on the number of students attending each tournament, you should be prepared to share your hotel room with three of your teammates of the same gender. This often means 4 people in a room with 2 double/queen beds. If you are not comfortable sharing a bed, bring a sleeping bag. Room assignments are made by the coaching staff and you must sleep in the room you are assigned. Be respectful of your team-mates, particularly when sharing a room.
- Each student will receive up to $10 per full day of travel for food, less if meals are provided by the tournament.
- Self transportation to and from tournaments requires prior approval from the program director.
- We depart for tournaments from campus. It is your responsibility to arrive at the designated meeting place with enough time to get your stuff loaded in the van (including debate supplies). You should also arrange to have a ride home when we return to campus after a tournament. We will not do personal pick-ups or drop-offs.
- Be on time when we are leaving for tournaments or risk being left (seriously, not a joke). Call the traveling coach immediately if you have a problem and might be late.
- When we return to campus, you will be expected to clean out the vans and return materials to the team room before you leave. Do not leave without letting a coach know.
- At tournaments, please act like the responsible adults you are. This means being on time for the van, meeting at designated places between rounds, etc.
- Do not, under any circumstance, argue with a critic, coach, or publicly with a teammate. Any problems should be brought to a coach’s attention for discussion away from the tournament.
- You may not leave the hotel/tournament without explicit permission from a coach.
- Due to budget and coaching limits, we can’t take all students to all tournaments. All students will have the opportunity to attend at least one tournament per semester. Travel decisions are at the discretion of the coaches.
- Students who back out of travel commitments for any reason other than those emergency exceptions stated below (documentation required) may have their semester grade decreased. When you back out of a tournament at the last minute you may be costing the team money and inconvenience the team overall.
- You will be taken off the travel roster if you are deemed unprepared to compete for any reason. This includes missed practice rounds, missed evidence assignments, or missed classes.
Alcohol & drug use policy: ZERO Tolerance
Students and coaches traveling with the team are on school business and are representatives of CSU Sacramento AT ALL TIMES while at tournaments. This includes at the tournament, at team meals, and at social events related to the tournament or our team.
Illegal drug use and underage drinking will not be tolerated – if you are found to be in possession of illegal drugs or if you use illegal drugs while on school business, you will be immediately dropped from the team. You will receive an “F” for the semester. You will be reported to the University and will be subject to other penalties. Responsible alcohol use is permitted by those students and coaches who are over the age of 21. If you become impaired while at a tournament you will be sent home from the event and possibly dropped from the team. Students who are under the age of 21 and consume alcoholic beverages while on school business and those over 21 who act irresponsibly while drinking (this includes but is not limited to giving alcohol to minors, being hung-over at the tournament, disrupting the peace at a hotel) will be dropped from the team and will receive an “F” for the semester. If you witness any of these policies being violated, please see a coach so that we can deal with the issue before it can hurt the entire team.
